How are inlays and onlays different?

Dr. Ariyev recommends an inlay if you have a permanent tooth with damage or decay in the center. Dr. Ariyev bonds the inlay on the top of the weak part of your tooth, restoring its strength, size, and shape. Onlays

Dr. Ariyev recommends an onlay if you have a permanent tooth where the damage or decay extends to your cusps (the tooth’s chewing surfaces). Dr. Ariyev bonds the onlay over the damaged or weak area, preventing additional problems.

What does getting inlays and onlays involve?

At Smile Studio of Great Neck, getting inlays and onlays takes just one visit.

First, Dr. Ariyev reviews your dental charts, completes an oral exam, and takes a series of digital X-rays. If you have a permanent tooth with significant damage or decay, you qualify for treatment. Dr. Ariyev takes digital impressions with an iTero scanner. He then uses these digital impressions to design a custom inlay or onlay from ceramic or porcelain. The restoration is then milled the same day using our Glidewell Fastmill.io while you wait comfortably in the dental chair. Dr. Ariyev then bonds the inlay or onlay on top of your tooth, checks your bite, and provides care instructions.

How long do inlays and onlays last?

Inlays and onlays last between 10-12 years* on average, but you can extend their use with good oral hygiene. Dr. Ariyev recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting Smile Studio of Great Neck every six months for an oral exam and preventive teeth cleaning.
